Residents are provided with a variety of regularly scheduled learning activities throughout the year. Weekly didactic conferences are held on Wednesday mornings, and this is protected time from clinical duties. During this time, lectures are provided by faculty, guest speakers (from other departments and other institutions) and residents. Residents are asked to prepare two to three grand rounds lectures each year. The didactic curriculum has been recently revamped and now corresponds to the Otolaryngology Core Curriculum (OCC), which was just launched by the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Each week, a new module is covered and a resident is chosen to lead a discussion along with a faculty mentor. Aside from the educational activities listed below, residents also participate in mock oral boards with faculty as well as quarterly journal clubs. Simulation and hands-on training courses are provided by faculty in the following areas: surgical airway, thyroid and neck ultrasound, microsurgery, facial fracture plating, endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery.
Residents are given subscriptions to the following tools:
- Board Vitals for Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery
- FLEX (Focused Lifelong Education Xperience) Program of AAO-HNS
- OCC (Otolaryngology Core Curriculum)
