Dr. Todd K. Rosengart Appointed Co-Editor of Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery

Todd K. Rosengart, MD, professor and chairman of surgery and chief of cardiothoracic surgery, has been selected to serve a three-year term as co-editor of Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, a leading national medical journal, beginning January 2013.

The journal, which is a publication of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), focuses on techniques and developments in cardiac surgery, pacemaker insertion/removal, lung and esophageal surgeries, heart and lung transplantation, and other procedures.

As co-editor, Dr. Rosengart will identify cardiac surgical topics to appear in each of the four issues published annually, identify and invite contributors for each of the cardiac sections, and interact with the associate managing editor in reviewing all articles and providing final approvals.

Dr. Rosengart will join co-editor Harvey I. Pass, MD, a distinguished thoracic surgeon, who will handle the same editorial responsibilities for general thoracic topics. Dr. Pass is a member of the faculty of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Division of Thoracic Surgery, at New York University.

"Following in the footsteps of esteemed past editors, this appointment is an incredibly exciting privilege to access the platform of Seminars as a means of bringing national and international attention to the many areas of progress in cardiac and thoracic surgery," says Dr. Rosengart. "And I look forward to the opportunity to work toward this end with our many colleagues, including those here in the Stony Brook community."

Established in 1989, Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery is devoted to keeping the practicing surgeon current. Each issue of this quarterly includes two topics, one on cardiac surgery and one on general thoracic surgery. Each topic is explored in approximately five articles that present detailed descriptions and sound evaluations of developments in diagnosis and treatment, new techniques, and scientific and technologic advances.

Drs. Rosengart and Pass will be introducing two new features in the journal, namely, a section on current readings guest edited by leaders in different areas of cardiothoracic surgery, to summarize critical new directions in the field; and an experts roundtable, featuring transcripts of moderated discussions on focused topics bearing on the advancement of cardiothoracic surgery.

The AATS was founded in 1917 by representatives from the specialties of anatomy, physiology, pathology, internal medicine, surgery, roentgenology, broncho- and esophago-scopy, and anesthesia, to foster the evolution of an interest in surgery of the thorax. Since that date, the association has continually encouraged and stimulated education and investigation into the areas of intrathoracic physiology, pathology, and therapy.

Originally created by an august group of twenty of the last century's earliest pioneers in the field of thoracic surgery, the AATS has now grown to an international organization of 1,143 whose members consist of the world's foremost cardiothoracic surgeons representing 34 countries throughout the world.
