Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency Application Process

  • Selection of colorectal residents is made through the National Resident Matching Program.
  • Successful completion of the United States Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) Step 3 by the second attempt or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam (COMLEX) Step 3 by the second attempt is required.
  • We are registered with the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which transmits residency applications, recommendation letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet. Applications will only be accepted through this system.
  • All applicants must be board eligible/certified in general surgery.
  • A personal interview is required.
  • Before the required interview takes place, three (3) letters of recommendation using the APDCRS Resident Candidate Assessment Form — one of which must be from the applicant's general surgery residency program director — are to be uploaded to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The standardised letter format must be used.
  • ABSITE scores are required.
  • Questions concerning the application process should be directed to the program coordinator, Deborah Thornton, via email, phone (631-444-1791/-8020) or fax (631-444-7689).
