The Department of Medicine is thrilled to announce that Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu is one of four finalists for the 2019 Discovery Prize. This annual distinguished honor and $200,000 prize is given to a Stony Brook University faculty member in the STEM disciplines whose research project embodies risk and innovation in their specific field.
In "Combinatorial Approach to Building a Kidney", Dr. Mallipattu’s laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms that mediate the development and progression of kidney disease. In this project, he will be working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers to pursue a combinatorial approach to building a whole kidney. The team will utilize novel stem cell technology in combination with biological and nonbiological scaffolds to promote whole kidney regeneration. Building an artificial kidney from patient-derived cells will have a profound impact in the medical field, as well as the addressing the rising burden of kidney disease, health care expenditures, and organ shortage in the United States.
Dr. Mallipattu holds a BS from UC San Diego and an MD from Boston University. He is currently the Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension, and is also the DCI-Liebowitz Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
He initially trained in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego with a subsequent medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He also conducted Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship training at Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.

The Discovery Prize was established in 2013 to advance pioneering scientific breakthroughs at a crucial time when federal funding for basic research was shrinking. The honor recognizes Stony Brook University’s continued pursuit of scientific discovery and academic excellence.
The scholar winner will be awarded on April 23rd at the Discovery Prize Competition, which will be held in the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. The generous donation is given yearly by the Stony Brook’s Foundation Board of Trustees.
