Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 (NOD2) associated diseases are a rapidly expanding group of inflammatory conditions including Crohn’s disease (CD), Blau syndrome (BS), and Yao syndrome (YAOS). While these disorders share some overlapping clinical manifestations, their clinical features, treatments, and outcomes are distinct. Among these conditions, YAOS has been recently characterized and involves multi-organ systems, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis and confusion with systemic autoimmune and other systemic auto-inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Fatima Sheikh joined the faculty in September 2021 as Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr. Sheikh is a graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She trained in Internal Medicine at St. Michael’s Medical Center and Nephrology Fellowship at Northwell Health. Dr. Sheikh will be seeing patients in the Nephrology Inpatient Consultation Services and new patients at 26 Research Way, Stony Brook Kidney Center, with a focus on Onco-nephrology.

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Dr. Sahar Ahmad will assume the position of Interim Chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine division, Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University. After 25 years of serving as Chief, Dr. Gerald Smaldone will step down from the chief position to return to the faculty.

Dr. Weiqin Lu received her Ph.D. degree from The University of Texas, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston in 2008. After completing her postdoctoral training at MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2011, she was promoted to Instructor.
