Appointment of Deepak Desai, M.D.

The Department of Medicine warmly announces the appointment of Deepak Desai, M.D. to Interim DIO and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Desai is currently the Chief of the Gastroenterology division at the Northport VA Medical Center, and our excellent Program Director in the Gastroenterology & Hepatology division in the Department of Medicine. We're thrilled and honored to share the full announcement below from William A. Wertheim, MD, Interim Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Dear All,

I am very happy to announce the appointment of Deepak Desai, MD, as interim DIO and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. He will begin his duties on February 15, 2021.

Dr. Desai is the current Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director and will continue to hold that responsibility while he serves in the interim DIO/Associate Dean for GME capacity. He is a graduate of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (where he was Valedictorian) and completed an Internal Medicine residency and Chief Residency at Stony Brook. He completed his Gastroenterology fellowship (where he also was Chief Fellow) at the University of Miami.

Since his training has completed, Dr. Desai spent some time in private practice in New Jersey and in Smithtown. He also has been on the faculty (both full-time and voluntary) since 2006, and was on the faculty at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine from 2013 to 2017. While at North Shore University Hospital, he served as Director of Quality for the Gastroenterology Division and Associate Chair of Medicine, and was awarded Sub-specialty Attending Teacher of the Year.

In 2017, Dr. Desai returned to Stony Brook and the Northport VA, where he has served as Chief of the Gastroenterology Division (Northport) and Fellowship Director of our Gastroenterology program.
