Transition of the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director Position

A message from Dr. Vincent Yang regarding the transition of the Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program position.

August 21, 2024

Dear Members of the DOM Community,

I write to let you know that Dr. Susan Lane will be stepping away from her current position of Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, effective September 1.  She will assume the position of Associate Dean for Clinical Faculty Development in the School of Medicine.  Susan will continue to serve as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine.  In her place, Dr. Patty Ng, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director, has graciously agree to serve as the next program director of the residency program.

In the 11 years of her service as PD, Susan worked tirelessly to improve the quality of the program in every aspect.  Under her tutelage, the IM residency has become one of the best programs in the region.  She developed a highly innovative curriculum that focuses not only on developing residents’ clinical and academic skills but that of professionalism.  She was instrumental in coaching residents and helped them achieve their career goals during and following their training.  This is demonstrated in part by the significantly higher board passing rates than national average and the excellent fellowship match rates for our graduating residents.  Importantly, Dr. Lane emphasizes the importance of resident wellness and provide invaluable support to them on a consistent basis.  Many of our outstanding graduates choose to remain at Stony Brook University Hospital for fellowship training and practice, a testament to the supportive environment of our program, department, and institution.

In addition to her contribution to the success of the residency program, Susan has made significant contribution to myriads of services, as exemplified by her chairing and/or serving on numerous committees at the school, regional, and national levels.  She enjoys broad recognition for her leadership, illustrated by her current or immediate past appointments as President of the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine (APDIM), Board of Directors of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), and Board of Directors of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society, among many others.  For her accolades, Dr. Lane was elected to be Master of American College of Physicians (MACP), and most recently, received the highly coveted rank of SUNY Distinguished Service Professor.

Dr. Patricia (Patty) Ng received both her B.S. and M.D. degrees from Stony Brook University.  She joined the Stony Brook faculty in 2016 upon completing Internal Medicine residency training at Brown University Rhode Island Hospital, where she also served as Chief Resident.  Because of her strong background in primary care, Patty was appointed APD and Director of the Primary Care track in our residency program shortly after she became a faculty member.  Since then, she has demonstrated exemplary citizenship by serving on numerous committees at the department, school, state, and national levels.  For example, Dr. Ng has been keenly involved in committees of AAIM and the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and is passionate about building a strong interest in primary care for our trainees.  She is also accomplished in scholarly activities with a focus on innovations in ambulatory education and has numerous peer-reviewed journal publications and abstract presentation at national meetings.

Transition in any organization represents a challenging period, especially with a residency program of our size.  However, nurtured by Dr. Lane, our program is strong and I am confident that Dr. Ng, with her already established reputation in education and training, will take over the program directorship seamlessly.  We thank Susan for her immense contribution to the program and Patty for her willingness to take on the PD role, and wish them well in their next leadership positions.

With best wishes,

Vincent W. Yang, M.D., Ph.D.
