Promotion of Farrukh Koraishy, M.D., Ph.D., to Clinical Professor of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Farrukh M. Koraishy, M.D., PhD., Division of Nephrology and Hypertension to Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

koraishyDr. Farrukh Koraishy joined the faculty in October 2019 and is a graduate of Dow Medical College in Pakistan. He trained in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, followed by Nephrology Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. During his fellowship training, he also received a PhD in Investigative Medicine, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University.

Prior to joining Stony Brook, he served on the faculty at St. Louis University Medical Center and John Cochran VA Medical Center, attaining the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine. Upon joining the Department of Medicine faculty in late 2019, Dr. Koraishy brought substantial experiences in medical education and clinical research to Stony Brook.

Dr. Koraishy has developed strong research collaboration with the Biomedical Informatics (BMI) at the SOM and Computer Science department at SBU and received numerous honors:

  • Obtained an R21 grant from the NIH: "Investigating the association of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in World Trade Center (WTC) responders" for his study on the association of mental health and kidney disease
  • Serves as the leader of the Kidney domain team on the NIH sponsored National Covid Cohort Collaborative (N3C)
  • Co-investigator in a SBU led NIH grant “Collaborative Analytics for EHR- and Other Real-World Data in N3C”
  • Received seed grants from Dialysis Clinics Incorporated (DCI), State University of New York (SUNY) and more recently from the Department of Medicine (DOM) for his work in machine learning, data science and kidney disease
  • Received the DOM Clinical Research Award in 2023

Following his passion to guide students and trainees, he has mentored several medical students, residents and fellows throughout his tenure as a faculty member and has guided many students and trainees towards Nephrology. Dr. Koraishy is a also a clinical mentor of many undergraduate and graduate students in data science, and served on the thesis committee of Masters and PhD students at Stony Brook University.

In addition to his research endeavors, Dr. Koraishy is also heavily invested in medical education in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Since 2021, he has been serving as the Nephrology course director at the SOM, as a voting member on the SBU-SOM Phase 1 Course Directors and Curriculum Committees, and as Nephrology Clerkship director. 

Finally, Dr. Koraishy also sees patients in the Nephrology Inpatient Consultation Services, clinic patients at 26 Research Way and Commack Road, and dialysis patients at the Stony Brook Kidney Center. Dr. Koraishy received institutional recognition in January 2024 for his outstanding patient care and modeling the Stony Brook's iCare values of integrity, compassion and excellence.
