Why Stony Brook? Food, animals, food (this is not a typo), searching for new snacks, overspending on iced coffee, avoiding hot coffee, going to Costco as frequently as possible without a shopping list, reading, oversharing, tennis, buying plants I can’t keep alive, saving money by buying things I don’t need on sale, spending time with my incredible family.
At some point when you research residency programs, they can start to blur together; all promise strong didactics, involved faculty mentors, and endless research opportunities. Stony Brook, however, had the results to prove it. Stony Brook’s physicians are consistently, tremendously successful. The program's graduates go on to hold competitive positions and match into prestigious fellowship positions, including within its own ranks, making it clear thar Stony Brook both welcomes its own graduates and prepares them to be competitive and to thrive anywhere they choose. Additionally, not only are the residents at Stony Brook competent, professional, and excellent physicians, they are personable and kind humans— during our virtual meet and greet, the residents joked and chatted with us and amongst themselves, demonstrating that they were a warm and close-knit group. When the program director, Dr. Lane, waited for me to fetch my cats so I could show them to her during my interview and enthusiastically reacted to them, I knew I had found the best home for myself for the next three years.
Last but certainly not least, I heard the food was excellent.
