Why Stony Brook? During the residency interview season, I was determined to seek out rigorous academic programs committed to nurturing and supporting the dreams and aspirations of their residents. In talking with my friends, other applicants and alumni of my medical school, I learned about their respective experiences with numerous residency programs. Whenever I spoke with someone about Stony Brook, a common theme I heard repeatedly was that Stony Brook’s Internal Medicine program was a collegial environment where everyone is out to support each other. Every residency applicant is looking for such qualities but to consistently hear these words used to describe a program makes it all the more appealing.

The more I learned about Stony Brook, the more interested I became. When I was offered an interview, I knew I could not pass up the opportunity to meet with the people who comprise the Internal Medicine program. After all, it is people, not buildings and budgets, who define an institution. My interview left me assured that Stony Brook would be a place where I could flourish, both as a clinician and as a human being. I have been heartened by the amount of grace and mentorship that our program directors, attendings, senior residents and staff have shown my residency classmates and myself as we endeavor in our respective journeys to become highly capable physicians. Furthermore, I look forward to immersing myself within the Long Island community and embracing all that the island has to offer.
