Why Stony Brook: From the moment I was accepted into medical school, I knew I would apply to SBU as an IM residency legacy. My father has nothing but high praises for the program and has always felt that his training here was second to none. One of my biggest draws to this program was my father’s continued connections with co-residents that showcased SBU’s culture of camaraderie that goes beyond the residency. And while meeting with the senior residents and witnessing their interaction, it was evident that this culture still remains as they all seemed like a close-knit group of friends. But, what really put Stony Brook at the top of my list was Dr. Susan Lane. From the moment she says hello, you can feel the enthusiasm of a program director who cherishes her residents and is invested in their lives. The exchanges between the residents and her gave insight how comfortable the residents felt with her and illuminated a special bond that I did not witness anywhere else. Even more shockingly, Dr. Lane brought that same caring energy into my one-on-one interview. I feel truly blessed having matched at SBU and having been welcomed by a group of amazing people, especially my co-interns and seniors, who have made my transition from Texas to the North East seamless and have made me love my time here on the Island.
