Dr. Ferrer's research interests broadly include integrating comparative phylogenetic and morphological studies to better understand the relationship between form and function in vertebrate evolution. More specifically, her research entails developing new comparative phylogenetic methods as well as studying the evolution of skull shape variation in groups like monitor lizards (and fossil relatives) using geometric morphometrics. She has more recently begun work on understanding the evolution of the flight-ready brain in birds using Computed Tomography (CT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). PET is an imaging technique that can be used to observe areas of the brain with high metabolic activity, thus providing information on what areas of the bird brain are most active during flight.
