Dr. Dorothy Lane received her B.A. degree from Vassar College, her M.D. degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and her M.P.H. degree from Columbia University School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine and completed a residency in Preventive Medicine (Public Health) with the New York City Department of Health.
 
Dr. Lane is currently a State University of New York (SUNY) Distinguished Service Professor, Vice Chair and Director of the Division of Community and Behavioral Health in the Department of Preventive Medicine, and the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Dr Lane is also the Director of the Stony Brook residency program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health, which she has been since its inception in 1982. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine.
 
Her scholarly activities have focused on the testing of community-based public and physician interventions to increase the use of preventive services, particularly breast and colorectal cancer screening, and on the development of competency-based education in preventive medicine. Dr Lane has been the Principal Investigator for a series of NCI grants and subcontracts spanning a 30 year period that focused initially on improving breast cancer screening rates and more recently has applied the same successful interventions to improving colorectal cancer screening. She is also the Project Director for one of five CDC funded colorectal cancer (CRC) screening demonstration programs that provide funding for CRC screening of the uninsured and underinsured. She is also currently Principal Investigator of an NHLBI Women’s Health Initiative Extension Field Center at Stony Brook and has been the PI of the WHI at Stony Brook since its inception in 1994.
 
Dr. Lane has been a prominent national leader in preventive medicine organizations, having served as President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Chair of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine. She is also active in continuing medical education activities at the local, state and national level, including serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the national Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Most recently Dr Lane has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
 
She has been recognized nationally for her distinguished achievements by the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine with their Duncan Clark Award, by the American College of Preventive Medicine with their Distinguished Service Award and by the ACGME with their Parker J Palmer Courage to Teach Award. Her publications have been widely cited and for many years she has been a speaker at national conferences, sharing her findings and insights to advance the field.
