Untrasound

What it is: Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to visualize body structures including tendons, muscles, joints, vessels and internal organs.

How it works: To obtain a typical sonogram, trained medical professionals known as sonographers use a hand-held probe over the part of the body that needs imaging. The results are then interpreted by a radiologist or other physician – usually the same day. The procedure in typically quick, painless and safe – no radiation is used.

Why it is used: It is used both diagnostically and therapeutically, as well as to guide interventional procedures such as biopsies. At Stony Brook, ultrasound services are available for sonographic needs, including breast, abdominal, pelvic and gynecological exams.
