The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Stony Brook is a four-year training program that requires an internship year as a prerequisite to residency training. The program meets all requirements of the American Board of Radiology and the ACGME.
Overview
The mission of our Residency Program is to provide an outstanding training experience that prepares you to become an exceptional, well-rounded radiologist. Our program offers a balance of high-volume clinical training, academic rigor, and innovation. As a large academic institution, we offer comprehensive on-site training across all major subspecialties, including pediatric imaging, body MRI, nuclear medicine, breast imaging, cardiac imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, interventional radiology, and advanced multimodality imaging*. As a Level 1 Trauma center and the only tertiary care center in eastern Long Island, Stony Brook University Hospital performs over 360,000 imaging studies annually*. This provides our residents with a diverse array of complex and high-acuity pathology.
Our program currently supports twenty-five diagnostic radiology residents as well as fellowship positions in neuroradiology, breast imaging, and musculoskeletal imaging. In addition to the radiology training, our residents have the unique opportunity to pursue a master’s degree or MBA, supported by the hospital union*.
They can also earn a certification in Radiology Informatics, Pediatric Radiology and Nuclear Medicine*. Many of our residents take advantage of these opportunities to earn additional degrees during their residency training.
As the program director and as an alum of both Stony Brook’s medical school and radiology residency, I take considerable pride in leading a program that shaped my own career. I bring with me the perspective of a Stony Brook trainee as well as the experience of having worked at multiple institutions and across several states since fellowship. I aim to use that experience to prepare my residents for a wide-range of career paths, including both academic and private practice settings. Many of our faculty members are also Stony Brook alumni who have returned to give back to the institution we are proud to call home. We are a close-knit, committed team dedicated to education, mentorship, and excellence. Finally, I want to highlight the exceptional accomplishments of our residents. This past year, 100% passed the ABR Core Exam on their first attempt. All four of our ESIR residents matched into their first choice for fellowship. This is a true testament to the strength of our residency program.
We hope you will consider joining us on this journey.
Sincerely,
Samantha Lok Yun Sung, MD
