Dr. Helen Hsieh

"I became a pediatric surgeon first and foremost for the patients. At Stony Brook Children's Hospital, I have the opportunity to provide integrated, leading-edge pediatric surgical care with the support of an extraordinary, child- and family-focused team."

Expertise: Specializes in surgery for infants, children, and adolescents from newborn to age 17. Performs a wide range of procedures — including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries — for congenital anomalies (abnormalities present at birth) and conditions including appendicitis, cancer, hernias, undescended testes, and traumatic injuries.

Stony Brook Children's Hospital is Suffolk County's only children's hospital.

Approach to care: "I want to provide each patient with the kind of care that I would want for my own child — highest quality, delivered with compassion." Dr. Hsieh is committed to collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to provide highly individualized care tailored to patients and their families.

Training: Dr. Hsieh received both of her doctorate degrees from Stony Brook University. She completed her residency in general surgery at McGill University, Montreal, and her fellowship in pediatric surgery at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ste. Justine, Montreal. Dr. Charles V. Coren | Stony Brook Pediatric Surgeon
Dr. Charles V. Coren
"Minor or major, every surgery is a big deal to patients and families — and that's especially true with pediatric surgery. Our challenge is to reduce the stress with friendly processes, communication, and clinical excellence."

Expertise: Dr. Coren performs advanced surgical procedures — including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), and open surgery — serving infants, children and young adults. He treats a wide range of conditions affecting the neck, esophagus, chest, abdomen, anorectum, and soft tissues, with a special focus on neonatal surgery, pediatric cancer and traumatic injuries. Dr. Coren also offers prenatal surgical consultations when congenital conditions (abnormalities present at birth) are suspected.

Approach to care: Committed to achieving optimal outcomes for patients. "This requires communicating effectively, compassionately and professionally with patients and families; making evidence-based decisions about diagnostic and therapeutic interventions; understanding children's evolving psychosocial and developmental needs; and working closely with other disciplines within our multidisciplinary, patient-focused team."

Training: Dr. Coren earned his medical degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, completed residency training in general surgery at New York University, and completed his fellowship training in pediatric surgery at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He is board certified in surgery and pediatric surgery.

"The child who needs specialized surgical and anesthetic care is best served by the skills of the appropriate pediatric surgical team.… The optimal management of the child with complex problems, chronic illness, or disabilities requires coordination, communication, and cooperation of the pediatric surgical specialist with the child's primary care pediatrician or physician." — Referral to Pediatric Surgical Specialists (Policy Statement), American Academy of Pediatrics
