December Distinguished Professor Eckard Wimmer receives the M.W. Beijerinck Virology Prize from the Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. This prestigious international award is given every three years to recognize outstanding achievement by a virologist. The award is in recognition of Professor Wimmer's contributions to the RNA virology field and his lifelong work on poliovirus.
  Professor Eugene Katz retires after 41 years at Stony Brook University. In addition to his research on the life cycle of the unicellular amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, his many contributions to the University include the creation of the Genetics Graduate Program in 1980 and the expansion of the undergraduate biology program during his years as Director of that program.
August Dr. Sumita Bhaduri-McIntosh joins the Department as Assistant Professor. Dr. Bhaduri-McIntosh's research concerns the early events that occur during infection of B lymphocytes with Epstein-Barr virus and molecular events that regulate the latent cycle-lytic cycle switch.
June Dr. David Thanassi is promoted to Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.
