October The development of a transposon and selection scheme  by Dr. Hwan Kim and colleagues, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is praised in a commentary in the October 8, 2019 issue.
September The Department welcomes Dr. Hwan Kim as its newest Assistant Professor. Dr. Kim's research focuses on tick-borne diseases caused by Rickettsia species.
August Dr. Brian Sheridan, Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, is the recipient of the 2019 Excellence in Early Career Research Award from the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
June Dr. Laurie Krug, Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, is the co-organizer of the 22nd International Workshop on Kaposi's Sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV) and Related Agents. This year the conference marks the 25th anniversary of the discovery of KSHV.

Dr. Bruce Futcher, Professor, and Dr. Steffen Mueller, Research Associate Professor, were honored as new members of the SBU Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors on May 1, 2019.

Dr. Christina Lazzarini, a postdoctoral research associate in Professor Maurizio Del Poeta's lab, received a Young Academic Inventor Award at the annual meeting of the SBU Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors on May 1, 2019.
