December Distinguished Professor Eckard Wimmer is elected to the rank of Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Wimmer received this honor for the sequencing of the poliovirus genome, for his work on poliovirus replication and pathogenesis, and for the cell-free synthesis of poliovirus.
October Dr. Martha Furie, Professor of Pathology and Molecular Genetics & Microbiology, is elected Vice President of the American Society for Investigative Pathology. Dr. Furie will become President-Elect of the ASIP in 2010 and President of the ASIP in 2011.
September Dr. Ellen Li joins the Department as Associate Professor. Dr. Li's primary appointment is in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Her research is focused on the molecular pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases.
March Dr. Erich Mackow, formerly of the Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University, joins the Department. Dr. Mackow's laboratory studies hantavirus, rotavirus and influenza virus pathogenesis.
