Program Director’s Welcome

Kaplan, Carl, MD, Program Director Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship Program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Our exciting new program will provide trainees with exposure to all aspects of the subspecialty and provide the environment needed to assimilate the knowledge and skills needed to practice and teach Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is part of Stony Brook Medicine, a network of hospitals providing care to the population of over 1.5 million residents in Suffolk County, New York. The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University (RSOM) is our academic partner and is part of a large, state University with over 17,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate students.

Our Pediatric Emergency Department evaluates over 26,000 patients annually, on the main University Hospital campus, in Stony Brook, NY. We see very diverse pathology and many of the patients present with high acuity illness or injury. We are an ACS Level 1 pediatric trauma center and regional burn center and receive pediatric patients through our transfer center, with both medical and surgical needs from various community hospitals throughout eastern Long Island.

The fellowship is newly accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education) and is looking forward to recruitment of a graduate from either pediatric or emergency medicine residency training. With mentorship from our 12 PEM faculty, we hope to engage inaugural trainees and give them the unique opportunity to help shape the program in accordance with our mission and values.

Fellowship is academically and clinically rigorous, but we strive to provide a rewarding experience and foster a culture and environment of growth for trainees. There is an abundance of personal and professional enrichment offered throughout the RSOM and Stony Brook University. Additionally Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area have a myriad of experiences to offer including beaches, parks, museums, restaurants, performances, and sporting events. We strive to allow the PEM fellow to strike a balance between training and this exciting time in their life.
