Mentorship

Mentorship

At Stony Brook Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, mentorship is a foundational part of the fellowship experience. We are committed to fostering an environment where fellows feel supported, challenged, and empowered throughout every stage of training and early career development.

Our mentorship philosophy is centered on individualized guidance, meaningful professional relationships, and long-term career growth. Fellows work closely with faculty mentors who are deeply invested in helping them achieve their personal and professional goals.

Individualized Faculty Advisor

Each fellow is paired with dedicated faculty advisor based on their academic interests, career aspirations, and professional goals. Mentorship relationships evolve throughout fellowship and provide guidance in areas including:

  • Clinical excellence and decision making
  • Research and scholarly activity
  • Medical education and teaching
  • Leadership development
  • Career planning and networking
  • Wellness and professional balance

Regular advisor meetings create opportunities for reflection, feedback, goal setting, and ongoing professional growth. Our fellows meet with their advisor twice a year at minimum.

Scholarly Mentorship

Faculty mentors work closely with fellows to identify meaningful scholarly projects that align with their interests and future career plans. Fellows receive support in developing projects from conception through presentation and publication.

Areas of scholarly mentorship include:

  • Clinical research
  • Quality improvement
  • Medical education
  • Simulation
  • Point-of-care ultrasound
  • Advocacy and community engagement
  • Global health initiatives

Our faculty provide guidance in abstract preparation, manuscript development, conference presentations, and academic networking within Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Career Development

We recognize that every fellow’s career path is unique. Whether pursuing academic medicine, community practice, fellowship leadership, or subspecialty niches within Pediatric Emergency Medicine, mentors help fellows navigate important career decisions and opportunities.

Career mentorship includes:

  • CV and portfolio development
  • Interview preparation
  • Academic advancement
  • Leadership opportunities
  • National committee involvement
  • Building professional networks

Our goal is to help fellows graduate with the skills, confidence, and support necessary to thrive as future leaders in the field.

A Culture of Support

Mentorship at Stony Brook extends beyond academics and clinical training. We strive to cultivate a collegial and inclusive environment where fellows feel valued as both physicians and individuals. Faculty maintain an open-door approach and prioritize fellow wellness, resilience, and work-life integration throughout training.

We believe strong mentorship creates not only excellent physicians, but also compassionate educators, scholars, and leaders.

Lifelong Professional Relationships

The mentorship experience at Stony Brook University is designed to extend well beyond fellowship graduation. Our faculty remain invested in fellows’ continued success and career advancement long after training is complete, fostering lifelong professional connections within the Pediatric Emergency Medicine community.
