The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Rajeev Rohatgi, M.D., FASN, Professor of Medicine, to Chair of Medicine at the Northport VA Medical Center, Northport, New York.

Dr. Rohatgi is an academic nephrologist who is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and most recently served as Chief of Nephrology at the James J. Peters VAMC in the Bronx, New York from 2021 through 2025. He's had multiple hospital appointments, including Chief of Nephrology at the Northport VAMC from 2015 through 2021 and Chairman, Research and Development Committee, Northport VAMC, from 2019 through 2021.

Dr. Rohatgi received a BA in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1991 and his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1995.  He completed both Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and was selected a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology in 2008.Dr. Rajeev Rohatgi

Dr. Rohatgi has an extensive research background and has authored numerous publications. He has served on several editorial boards, including Review Editor for the Nephrology section of Frontiers in Medicine and Review Editor for Frontiers in Renal and Epithelia Biology. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

The focus of Dr. Rohatgi’s lab has been on the role of hydrodynamic forces on renal tubular epithelial cell function and physiology. His interest in this topic was born after he received his NIH K08 award to investigate the role of transepithelial sodium (Na+) transport in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD).  More recently his lab has focused their efforts on the effect of lipids on renal cation transport, and the subsequent rise in systemic blood pressure.

Dr. Rohatgi has also received multiple federal and foundation grants supporting his basic science investigations. He won American Journal of Physiology:  Renal Physiology paper of the year in 2012 on his manuscript entitled “Flow-induced prostaglandin E2 release regulates Na and K transport in the collecting duct”. In 2021, Dr. Rohatgi was selected for the Clinical Scientist Investigator Award (CSI) for a grant entitled: “Lipid Rafts: Mechanosensors of the distal neuron.”

Dr. Rohatgi’s clinical interests include the use of telehealth/telenephrology in the management of renal patients where he has published several manuscripts on the topic.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Rohatgi on this well-earned appointment of Chair of Medicine at the Northport VA Medical Center.
