Announcement: Retirement of Dr. Wadie F. Bahou, Emeritus Professor

Dear Department of Medicine Community:

It is with best wishes that we announce the retirement of Wadie F. Bahou, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Molecular Genetics, and his transition to the role of SUNY Emeritus Professor.  He has provided 35 years of dedicated clinical and educational service to the Department of Medicine in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Bahou has made valuable contributions to both the Department of Medicine and the School of Medicine.  He has served in various administrative roles including Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Director, Division Chief of Hematology, Associate Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), Vice Chairman of the Dept. Medicine, and Vice Dean of Research.   Dr. Bahou played a crucial role in securing the Stem Cell Research grant awarded to Stony Brook as part of $30.5 million in funding from the Empire State Stem Cell Board.  This program cultivated collaborative efforts that grew to encompass several departments within the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Over the course of his tenure at Stony Brook, he has published over 100 manuscripts in scientific and clinical journals, and has received >30 years of extramural federal funding from NIH and other sources.  He is inventor on various patents related to novel blood therapies, some of which remain under preclinical development.  He takes pride in his long-term dedication to career education and trainee mentoring, both at undergraduate and graduate levels.  Mentees have received MD and PhD degrees, along with post-doctoral subspecialty training for the next-generation of clinical hematologists.  He is grateful to the many patients who have participated in his research endeavors over the past many years.

Congratulations to Dr. Bahou on an illustrious career!  We wish to thank him for his services to the University, and we extend our best wishes to him in his future endeavors.
