Welcoming Dr. Chiung-Kuei Huang, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Dear Department of Medicine Community:

We are excited to introduce a new faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Chiung-Kuei Huang is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Liver Research in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Chiung-Kuei Huang received his B.Sc. in Biology and M.Sc. in Biotechnology from National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, and completed a Ph.D. at the University of Rochester, where he studied androgen receptor (AR) targeting in stem cell therapy for liver fibrosis under Dr. Chawnshang Chang, who first cloned the full-length human AR.

He completed postdoctoral training on AR’s role in sex differences in cardiovascular disease, revealing its therapeutic potential in atherosclerosis and aneurysms. With growing interest in liver disease, he joined the Liver Research Center at Brown University, where, under Dr. Jack Wands, he co-discovered ASPH’s role in liver cancer progression.

As Assistant Professor (Research) at Brown, Dr. Huang received the AASLD Pinnacle Research Award. He then expanded into epigenetics, showing that alcohol suppresses 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) via TET1 downregulation. Dr. Huang was recruited to Tulane University where he leads an independent lab investigating ASPH and TET1 in MASLD and ALD-related liver cancer. His findings have earned him multiple NIH grants, including two R21s and two R01s, and support ongoing work on sex-based differences in alcohol-related liver injury.

Since 2020, Dr. Huang’s NIH-funded research has aimed to identify novel therapeutic targets for MASLD- and ALD-related liver cancer by integrating clinical and basic science.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Huang to the Stony Brook community.
