The New Division of Hospital Medicine

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that, effective immediately, the Section of Hospital Medicine within the Division of General, Geriatrics, and Hospital Medicine, Department of Medicine, is now a stand-alone division as the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine.  The former division is now Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics, which will continue to serve as the primary care provider in our outpatient arena.

Since its inception in 2010 with just 11 faculty members, the Inpatient Hospitalists program has expanded to a team of 136 exceptional clinicians and advanced practitioners, now a single largest specialty provider group within Stony Brook Medicine. The Division of Hospital Medicine cares for on average 300 inpatients daily, comprising forty-five percent of the hospital census.

Additionally, the clinical scope of the Division extends to the co-management of patients on multiple specialty services including Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Nephrology, Leukemia Lymphoma & Transplant, and Oncology as well as providing a medical consult service and performing pre-operative risk assessment.  Beyond our main campus, the division has extended its reach to Gurwin Jewish rehab, providing expert care in the subacute rehabilitation setting, further broadening its contribution to our continuum of care. In the coming months, the Division will also be working with our clinically integrated network of hospitals and practice groups.

In addition to its clinical responsibilities, the Division of Hospital Medicine plays a vital role in our academic mission.  This involves teaching medical students, interns, residents, and fellows during their inpatient rotations, and meaningfully contributing to their clinical development.  The Division is also actively engaged in quality improvement initiatives throughout the institution, advancing patient care, safety, patient experience, and operational excellence.

I would like to thank the members of the Department of Medicine that have helped to foster the clinical and academic growth of the Hospital Medicine Division since its inception, particularly the leadership of Dr Fields in her role as Division Chief of General, Geriatric, and Hospital Medicine.

With this transition to divisional status, I am pleased to announce new leadership roles:

  • Dr. Sadia Abbasi will serve as Division Chief of Hospital Medicine
  • Dr. Marshall Miller will take on the role of Associate Division Chief

Together, Drs. Abbasi and Miller will guide the division in its dual mission: delivering outstanding clinical care and maintaining robust educational opportunities to train the next generation of physicians and physician leaders.

Sincerely,
Vince Yang
