Retirement of Dr. Marie Gelato and Toll Professor Appointment

Dear Department of Medicine Community:

It is with best wishes that we announce the retirement of Marie Gelato, M.D., Ph.D., SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and her transition to the role of Toll Professor after a distinguished 38-year career.

Dr. Gelato is a highly regarded physician and has been recognized as a top doctor in Castle and Connolly for over 20 years. She’s also a dedicated educator serving as Director of the Endocrine System course for many years. This course is part of a larger curriculum (the Integrated Pathophysiology Course) that is taught to the second-year medical students. Dr. Gelato consistently received excellent ratings for her course instruction. Dr. Marie Gelato

Over the course of her career, Dr. Gelato has made significant contributions to the Department of Medicine as well as to the Renaissance School of Medicine.  Under her direction, we were successful in obtaining NIH funding for a General Clinical Research Center for over 10 years.  Through this center, funding for an NIH K 30 education program was secured resulting in the establishment of a Master of Science in Epidemiology & Clinical Research degree program granted through the State of New York.

Dr. Gelato holds various roles in the Department of Medicine including Chair of the Research Committee and the Chair of the departmental Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee. As Chair of the Research Committee, she organizes the annual research symposium that highlights research projects underway in the Department of Medicine. The symposium is well attended and highly rated by the attendees.

Dr. Gelato also coordinates our Pilot Project Grant Program that awards small grants to faculty to engage in all forms of research.  This program led to numerous published research papers by our faculty and has helped them secure funding for additional research.

As Chair of the Department of Medicine APT Committee, Dr. Gelato advises our faculty about the appointment, promotion and review process, and evaluates all applications prior to submission to ensure they are complete and meet the criteria for promotion, tenure or appointment.

Under Dr. Gelato’s oversight, our departmental APT committee has a very successful track record with approval of all submissions over  the last 10 years.  Her service to the Renaissance School of Medicine and the Department of Medicine culminated in her appointment as a SUNY Distinguished Professor in 2018

Congratulations to Dr. Gelato on an illustrious career. We wish to thank her for her services to the University, and we extend our best wishes to her in her future endeavors.

Sincerely,
