The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Nikhil Mehta, an incoming M1 at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, has been awarded the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Student Research Fellowship Award for his project, “Clinical Predictors and Molecular Mechanisms of Treatment Resistance in Perianal Fistulizing Crohn’s Disease.”

Under the mentorship of Drs. Lasha Gogokhia and Agnieszka Bialkowska,
Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook Medicine, Nikhil will study clinical predictors of treatment failure and molecular signatures associated with fistula inflammation and healing.
Combining retrospective clinical analysis with translational molecular studies of Stony Brook IBD biobank samples, his project aims to identify high-risk patients, candidate biomarkers, and potential therapeutic targets for this challenging complication of Crohn’s disease.
The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Student Research Fellowship Award offers financial support for students to spend time performing research on topics relevant to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), or Crohn's disese and ulcerative colitis.
Congratulations to Nikhil on receiving this prestigious award.
