The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Agnieszka Bialkowska, Ph.D. to Professor of Medicine with Tenure in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Agnieszka Bialkowska received her PhD degree in Microbiology in 2003 from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. She furthered her training in gene therapy and cancer biology during her postdoctoral studies at Louisiana Health Science Center in New Orleans and Emory University in Atlanta, respectively.

In 2011, she joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook University. Dr. Bialkowska’s studies are focused on two major projects: the first focuses on understanding the mechanisms regulating intestinal inflammation, carcinogenesis, and regeneration. She is specifically interested in the transcriptional and epigenetic modifications that regulate these processes and contribute to the homeostasis of the gastrointestinal tract. The second project focuses on understanding the mechanisms regulating the development and progression of pancreatic diseases, with a particular focus on chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Bialkowska is interested in the interactions among acinar cells, immune cells, and stellate cells, and how this cross-talk shapes the pancreas's response to injury. Her research focuses on understanding the role of the pancreatic environment in the development and progression of pancreatic diseases.
Her work in this area promises to enable the development of therapeutics for colorectal and pancreatic diseases. Dr. Bialkowska's studies are supported by the United States National Institutes of Health, the CDMRP administered by the Department of Defense, and the Pilot Project grants from the Department of Medicine, Stony Brook University.
Dr. Bialkowska teaches, mentors, and supervises the laboratory efforts of high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, postdoctoral associates, and research assistants.
She is a member of the School of Medicine Faculty Senate at Stony Brook School of Medicine, the Cancer Center’s Oncogenic Drivers and Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis Program, and Institute of Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery (ICB&DD) at Stony Brook University. In addition, she is involved in grant application review process at NIH, European Research Council, and Medical Research Council at UK Research and Innovation.
Most recently, Dr. Bialkowska was appointed the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine in March 2026.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Bialkowska on this well-earned promotion, and in recognizing her excellence as a researcher, leader, and educator within the Department of Medicine and the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
