The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Ibrahim Almasry, M.D., FACC, FHRS, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
An internationally trained physician, Dr. Almasry received his medical degree with honors from Cairo University School of Medicine. He completed his postgraduate training and residency in Internal Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine, followed by a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed his Cardiology Fellowship Training at St. Elizabeth’s Medical center (Tufts University School of Medicine) and went on to Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Almasry received ABIM Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Cardiac Electrophysiology. Since joining Stony Brook in 2007, he has played a vital role in advancing the Cardiac Electrophysiology program, offering state-of-the-art arrhythmia management, complex ablation procedures, and device therapies.
Dr. Almasry is particularly recognized for his innovative work in subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) implantation techniques, and has served as Course Director and Lecturer at national and international forums, including the Heart Rhythm Society and SICD training courses across the U.S. His surgical innovations and procedural leadership have contributed significantly to improved patient outcomes and broader adoption of minimally invasive electrophysiological interventions.
In addition to his clinical impact, Dr. Almasry has made significant contributions to clinical research as a co-investigator in multiple multicenter trials and device studies, and has presented at both national and international conferences. His work has helped shape current best practices in atrial fibrillation ablation, antiarrhythmic pharmacotherapy, and implantable cardiac device therapy.
Equally committed to education, Dr. Almasry has been a cornerstone of teaching at Stony Brook, mentoring medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows. He is the Director and primary curriculum designer of several core courses, including the Medical Student Cardiac Arrhythmias Course and the Cardiac Antiarrhythmic Pharmacotherapeutics Course, and is a frequent recipient of teaching commendations, including the Faculty Teaching Award in 2014.
As a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Rhythm Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Almasry exemplifies the highest standards of professional excellence. His promotion is a testament to a career marked by clinical leadership, academic distinction, and dedication to advancing the field of cardiovascular medicine.
