The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Amna F. Sher, M.D., to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Sher received her Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree in 2005 from Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Pakistan, graduating with Honors. She was a Clinical Research Fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School before joining Stony Brook for her Internal Medicine residency and Hematology & Oncology
fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital. 
Dr. Sher joined The Department of Medicine in 2016 as Hematology & Oncology faculty. She is currently board certified in Internal medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology and specializes in the treatment of thoracic, cutaneous and gastro-intestinal malignancies. Since joining the faculty, Dr. Sher has developed a robust clinical and research portfolio focused on advancing cancer care through innovative clinical trials and translational research. She serves as the Institutional Principal Investigator for the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group and Institutional Chair for NRG Oncology, leading Stony Brook’s participation in national cancer clinical trial networks. She has served as the Site Principal Investigator for numerous multicenter clinical trials investigating novel therapies for lung cancer, GI cancers, and other solid tumors.
Dr. Sher's scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, and invited lectures on immunotherapy and advances in thoracic oncology. Her work has been presented at major scientific meetings, such as American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC.
Dr. Sher has also played an integral role in the training of medical students, residents, and hematology-oncology fellows, and has mentored numerous trainees who have gone on to successful careers in academic medicine. Her accomplishments have been recognized through numerous honors, including election as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2025 and was awarded Hematology and Oncology Division Teacher of the Year in 2026.
Dr. Sher serves in many committees in the Stony Brook Cancer Center and Stony Brook University Hospital. She currently serves as the Chair of the Cancer Center Resource Assessment and Feasibility Technical Review (RAFTR) Committee and Chair of the Cancer Center Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Her service extends across multiple institutional committees dedicated to clinical research, quality improvement, patient safety, fellowship education, and cancer program development.
