The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Luis A. Marcos, M.D., M.P.H., FIDSA, Division of Infectious Diseases, to Professor of Medicine with Tenure in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Luis A. Marcos is a Peruvian-Spanish-American physician-scientist and clinical educator who has served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University since 2015. He earned his MD degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru, the country’s top-ranked medical school. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to joining Stony Brook University, Dr. Marcos also earned a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

Since joining Stony Brook in 2015, Dr. Marcos has been board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has led multiple academic, clinical, and research initiatives. He has spearheaded global health programs for medical students in Madagascar and Peru and has successfully obtained consecutive research grants since 2016 to support international medical student research. In addition, he has secured several federal grants to support his work in tick-borne diseases and currently leads one of the largest tick-borne disease cohorts in the United States.
Dr. Marcos has received numerous awards and recognitions for his teaching and mentorship, including the Faculty Mentorship Award from the Department of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and has received additional national and international honors. He has authored more than 110 peer-reviewed publications and has served on key national committees on tick-borne diseases, providing reports to the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Congress, and the New York State Department of Health.
Dr. Marcos is currently the Director of the Tick-Borne Diseases Clinic at Stony Brook University. Dr. Marcos’s passion for teaching is evident in all aspects of his work, and he currently serves as the Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at our institution.
