The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Prashant Malhotra, M.D., to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Malhotra began his academic journey at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, one of India's premier medical institutions. He then completed his fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at North Shore University Hospital, part of the Northwell Health System.
Over the subsequent 14 years, he served as Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Northwell Health. During this time, he balanced busy inpatient and outpatient clinical practice with significant educational, research, and administrative responsibilities.
As a clinician-educator, he was actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows. His commitment to medical education was recognized when Dr. Malhotra was honored with the Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year Award for 2015–2016.
His research has focused on the application of novel technologies for the diagnosis, prevention, and management of infectious diseases. Collectively, these and other scholarly activities have resulted in more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, posters, and book chapters.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Malhotra served as the principal site investigator for an industry-sponsored Phase III clinical trial evaluating a novel therapeutic agent for COVID-19, and as co-investigator on two additional clinical trials. The findings of the Phase III study were subsequently published in JAMA and contributed to the development of national and international treatment guidelines for COVID-19.
On October 1, 2025, he joined the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University as an Associate Professor. Dr. Malhotra's experiences as a clinician, educator, researcher, mentor, and administrator has instilled a deep appreciation for the importance of creating an environment where all members of the academic community are respected, supported, and provided equal opportunities to succeed.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Malhotra on this well-earned appointment, and in recognizing his excellence as a clinician, leader, and educator within the Department of Medicine, the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University and the Division of Infectious Diseases. We thank him for his many contributions to our institution.
