The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of John Patrick Reilly, M.D., Division of Cardiology, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Reilly is a leading interventional cardiologist who specializes in the treatment of complex coronary and peripheral arterial disease, venous thrombotic disease, carotid and cerebrovascular disease as well as structural heart disease. He has had particular interest in renal denervation therapy for hypertension and was one of the highest enrollers in the pivotal trial RADIANCE TRIO. He also demonstrated the potential for renal denervation to improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction in a swine model.
Dr. Reilly is a regular faculty member for national and international meetings for cardiology and interventional cardiology. His technical excellence has been recognized at national and international meetings that have selected him as an operator for live case demonstrations. He has been invited by American College of Cardiology and Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention as a delegate to international meetings in China and India respectively. Dr. Reilly has been a leader for national societies having served as chair of the Public Relations committee and on the Board of Trustees for SCAI and is currently on its Governance Committee. He has recently been appointed as Chair Elect for the Curriculum Design Committee for ACC.
J.P. Reilly joined Stony Brook in 2018 after a working at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans where he was Vice Chair of Cardiology and System Wide Cath Lab Director. He brings this rich leadership and administrative experience to Stony Brook as Chair of Cardiology at Southampton Hospital and Director of East End Cardiology Development. Dr. Reilly has led several quality improvement initiatives to provide excellent cardiac care at Southampton Hospital. These initiatives have optimized post MI care, referral to cardiac rehab, expedited evaluation of chest pain and brought more advanced cardiac imaging to the South Fork.
Dr. Reilly has been recognized for his particular interest and patience as an educator. He has won teacher of the year awards multiple times from cardiology fellows and internal medicine residents at Ochsner. He served as program director for cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowship programs while at Ochsner. His educational interest also extends to CME programs as director for All That Jazz, and Cardiology on the East End. He created a parallel course specifically for interventional fellows as part of All That Jazz. And recently was selected as an Advanced Educator for the American College of Cardiology.
J.P. Reilly earned his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He then trained in internal medicine at NYU Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital. He was selected as a chief resident for the program, an additional year during which he oversaw both education and administration of over one hundred residents in the program. He successfully remained at NYU for fellowship training in cardiology. Dr. Reilly then trained in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California with Dr. Teirstein,
the inventor of intracoronary brachytherapy, and Dr. Schatz, the inventor of the coronary stent.
