Promotion of Saika Sharmeen, D.O., FACR, FACP, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Saika Sharmeen, D.O., FACR, FACP, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Sharmeen received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Morningside-West and her Rheumatology fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University before joining the Stony Brook faculty in 2019. She was appointed Associate Program Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program in 2022. Saika Sharmeen, D.O., FACR, FACP

Dr. Sharmeen is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Since joining the faculty, she has developed a strong clinical, educational, and scholarly portfolio dedicated to advancing rheumatology through patient care, medical education, clinical research, and mentorship. 

As Associate Program Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program, Dr. Sharmeen has played a central role in fellowship education by developing and directing the weekly Rheumatology Clinical and Board Review Curriculum, organizing multidisciplinary conferences, participating in fellow recruitment and milestone assessments, and providing direct observation and individualized feedback to trainees. She also contributes to the Renaissance School of Medicine curriculum and regularly teaches medical students, residents, and fellows through lectures, clinical preceptorships, and case-based learning.

Dr. Sharmeen has developed a growing research portfolio focused on autoimmune diseases, inflammatory myopathies, osteoporosis, and medical education. She has served as principal investigator on investigator-initiated research, mentored trainees whose work has been presented nationally and published in peer-reviewed journals, and authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, review articles, book chapters, and abstracts. 

In recognition of her expertise in rheumatology education and assessment, Dr. Sharmeen was selected to serve on the American Board of Internal Medicine Rheumatology Item-Writing Task Force, where she contributes to the development of national board certification examinations. She also serves on the American College of Rheumatology Collaborative Initiatives Anti-TNF Workgroup, helping develop continuing medical education resources and evidence-based clinical guidance for rheumatologists.

Dr. Sharmeen is committed to medical education, faculty development, physician wellness, and quality improvement. She serves on institutional and departmental committees focused on medical education, faculty development, wellness initiatives, post-COVID care, and fellowship training, while also contributing to several committees within the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians.

Her accomplishments have been recognized through numerous honors, including selection as an American College of Rheumatology Knowledge Bowl Finalist and election as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. She has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2024 and a Top AAPI Doctor since 2026.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Sharmeen is committed to community outreach and patient education through invited community lectures and national media contributions on osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune diseases.
