Promotion of Edlira Tam, DO, MS, FACC, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Edlira Tam, DO, MS, FACC, Division of Cardiology, to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Tam is an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist at Stony Brook Heart Institute. She also serves as Associate Director of the Ventricular Assist Device/Mechanical Circulatory Support Program and Associate Director of the Cardiogenic Shock Program. In these leadership roles, Dr. Tam has helped establish Stony Brook as a regional center for advanced heart failure care, overseeing clinical protocols, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration for patients requiring mechanical circulatory support and transplant evaluation.

Her clinical expertise includes the care of patients with heart failure, cardiomyopathies, complex valvular and coronary disease, and cardio-obstetric conditions. She is the lead physician for Stony Brook’s outpatient LVAD program, managing most of the center’s patients with durable mechanical circulatory support.

Dr. Tam’s research focuses on temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support in cardiogenic shock. She is a highly regarded educator who plays an integral role in the training of cardiology fellows and internal medicine residents. In recognition of her excellence in teaching, she was awarded the Stony Brook Department of Medicine Teaching-Educator Award in 2024 and the Stony Brook Cardiology Faculty Teaching and Mentoring Award in 2023.

On a national level, she is an active member of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, the Heart Failure Society of America, and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. She has been elevated to the status of Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Her involvement with these professional societies underscores her standing in the field. She currently serves as Chair of the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology/Laennec Society Committee and previously served on the Heart Failure Society of America Patient Committee. She has also contributed as a proposal and abstract reviewer at multiple national meetings.

Dr. Tam earned her undergraduate degree with honors from Queens College and received both her Master of Science and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees with honors from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant Cardiology fellowships at Montefiore Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Cardiology Fellow. Dr. Tam joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stony Brook in 2021.
