Promotion of Smadar Kort, M.D., to Professor of Medicine with Tenure

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Smadar Kort, MD, FACC, FASE, FAHA from the Division of Cardiology, to Professor of Medicine with Tenure in the Renaissance School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Kort was recruited to Stony Brook as the Director of Echocardiography in May 2005. In addition, she is serving multiple other critical roles including:

  • System Director of Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Imaging 
  • Director, Structural Heart Imaging Program
  • Co-Director of the Valve Center 

Dr. Kort received her medical degree from Sackler School of Medicine in Israel. She completed internship and residency in internal medicine as well as fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City, followed by advanced fellowship in echocardiography at NYU Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Kort is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and in adult echocardiography, and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Heart Association. 

She has been holding several leadership positions within professional organizations, including:

  • Member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Echocardiography
  • Member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology and the steering committee of that board
  • Editor in Chief of EchoSAP

Among the numerous national committees she served on, Dr. Kort was also a member of the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee of the CMS.

She currently serves as the Chair of the Committee on Accreditation for Education in Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography, a member of the Inaugural Steering Committee of the critical care echo council of the American Society of Echo, and Co-Chair of the American College of Cardiology Advocacy workgroup.
