Dear Department of Medicine Community:
We are excited to introduce a new faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Thomas Holowka, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
Dr. Holowka received his BA from Haverford College in 2007 and worked as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania prior to pursuing a doctorate in Microbiology at Yale University. He conducted his dissertation research in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Bucala, where he studied the host immune response to parasitic pathogens including Leishmania and Plasmodium.
Immediately after completing his PhD in 2014 he began medical school at Stony Brook University, where he received his MD in 2018. He returned to Yale for a residency in Internal Medicine then chose to subspecialize in Infectious Diseases, beginning his fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2021.
After completing his clinical training he continued to pursue research under Dr. Luther Bartelt focusing on the pathogenesis of multidrug resistant bacteria. Additionally, Dr. Holowka assisted in founding a clinical practice specializing in the care of Clostridioides difficile infection at UNC. In 2025 he returned to Stony Brook University to continue his Infectious Diseases practice and establish a research program devoted to pathogens occupying the intestinal space.
