Welcome to the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Training Program at Stony Brook Medicine.
We offer a three-year ACGME-accredited combined fellowship in hematology and medical oncology.
Our goal is to prepare fellows with exceptional training in all aspects of benign hematology, solid tumor oncology, hematologic malignancies, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation so that they can emerge as outstanding clinicians, innovative researchers, and leaders in fields of hematology and medical oncology.
Our program offers a broad range of robust clinical experiences, educational activities, and opportunities to engage in basic, translational, and clinical research designed to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of hematologic
and oncologic diseases.
Stony Brook University Hospital is the flagship institution of the Stony Brook Medicine Health System and a referral center for all of Long Island. As a 695-bed hospital and the only tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center in Suffolk County, fellows are exposed to a diverse patient population and broad range of hematologic and oncologic disorders. At the University Hospital, fellows spend time caring for inpatients on our Medical Oncology Consult and Teaching Service, Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplant Team, and Hematology Consult Service. Elective rotations are also available with Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, Blood Bank, Special Hematology, and Hematopathology services.
The Stony Brook Cancer Center encompasses two levels of the newly constructed and state-of-the-art Medicine and Research Translation (MART) Building. Here, fellows work as part of a multidisciplinary subspecialized team to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Subspecialty Teams include Breast, Colorectal, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Thoracic, Head & Neck (including Thyroid), Melanoma, Sarcoma, Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplantation. Fellows also have the opportunity to rotate with Gynecologic, Neurologic, and Orthopedic Oncology Teams.
The Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center provides health care services to veterans across Long Island and surrounding areas. Under the close supervision of faculty, fellows manage and run their own hematology/oncology continuity clinics and perform consultations on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
At the end of the 3-year training program, fellows possess the knowledge and skills essential for the delivery of effective and evidence-based cancer care and passage of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification exams in both hematology and medical oncology.
