Advanced Cardiac Imaging - Research

Our Research:

The Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging and Dalio Center for Cardiovascular Wellness and Preventive Research is the recipient of more than $9 million in grant funding to be used to translate scientific ideas into validated medical treatments and procedures and to transition medical treatments that have been validated through clinical trials into daily practice, thereby improving health status and quality of life for our patients.

Our current clinical focus evaluates the use Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) as a tool to improve patients’ wellness and quality of life. Currently standard of care for many end stage cardiac diseases, including heart failure and cardiomyopathy, EECP also may have potential as a noninvasive procedure that can improve the function of the circulatory system. Improvements in circulation are key to maintenance of cardiovascular wellness, and have also been shown to play important roles in such diseases as diabetes and dementia. Our hope is that our research will begin a journey leading to improvement of quality of life for the many patients with these challenging chronic diseases.

We maintain a registry of patients receiving CCTA services in order to provide medical data relevant to treatment of patients with cardiac disease. Cardiac imaging provides many opportunities for collaboration of disease related to the circulatory system, and we currently have active collaborations with Cardiology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine.

We believe that our recent introduction of CCTA into our Emergency Department as standard of care made us the only U.S. hospital to offer this treatment routinely, 7 days per week, 12 hours per day. Our recent publication in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC 62(6), 543-552 (2013)) details the benefits of the technology to our patient population. Our current research in evaluating the use of tele-medicine to expand access to CCTA has the potential to ultimately offer improved quality and reduced cost of care to millions of American who experience chest pain each year.

Providing for Our Future:

Our unique, cutting edge technology, combined with the outstanding competence and dedication of our clinical and research staff makes Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging and Dalio Center for Cardiovascular Wellness and Preventive Research at Stony Brook Medicine an outstanding learning environment for medical students, residents, and fellows interested in pursuing both clinical and research careers in imaging and cardiology. Currently our program has one dedicated Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging fellow and provides clinical rotations to 1 to 2 cardiology fellows and 1 to 2 radiology residents concurrently.
