The Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) welcomes observers who shadow our expert faculty at Stony Brook Medicine. Observers include physicians, dentists, residents, fellows, and selected high school or college students who are accepted as visitors by an academic program or department within the RSOM. As observers, they have no patient care role at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) or at any of the Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) clinical sites. They are the guests of the respective SBM Clinical Chief or Chair, and they are under the supervision of an SBM attending physician at all times. Please review the Observer Policy and complete the following steps below which are required before observing or shadowing within SBM clinical departments.
Brief Observers: The RSOM defines a “Brief Observer” as an observer with a restricted time allotment of two (2) workdays or less. Brief Observers include, but are not limited to, prospective faculty or residency/fellowship candidates (medical/graduate students); clinical experts who provide mentoring or training to SBUH faculty and/or staff members in the clinical setting; and visiting physicians and/or advanced practitioners receiving training from SBUH faculty. (Please note: If you are a Brief Observer, completing the Observer Health History Form is not required.)
The following is the procedure for those who want to observe or shadow in any of the clinical departments at Stony Brook Medicine. Please review and complete all steps as required:
- Obtain email approval from the designee from the clinical department including duration of the experience.
- You and your healthcare provider complete the Pre-Placement Physical Form.

- Review the HIPPA Training presentation and complete the HIPPA Declaration.
