Parental Leave Policy
Many residents choose to start or grow their families during training. Our parental leave benefits reflect our commitment to resident well-being, and we are proud to foster a culture in which residents feel supported, valued, and empowered to build both a career and a family.
Stony Brook's parental leave options are summarized below. Please note that this overview is intended as a general guide. Eligibility requirements vary by leave type and will be reviewed with you and Human Resources when you begin the request process. Depending on the type and duration of leave selected, your training timeline may be affected. You will work closely with your Program Director to develop an individualized plan. All leaves of absence must comply with the American Board of Pediatrics Absences from Training Policy to maintain board eligibility.
Many residents choose to combine paid leave benefits with vacation time to create a leave plan that meets their family's needs. While most residents are able to complete training on schedule, some may elect to take a longer leave of absence that requires an extension of training in accordance with American Board of Pediatrics policies. The Program Director works individually with each resident considering parental leave to review available options and develop an appropriate plan.
