The Stony Brook Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship, is a 12-month (August 1 - July 31), ACGME-accredited program that provides a comprehensive curriculum for training the next generation of leaders in obstetric anesthesiology. The mission of the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program is to cultivate obstetric anesthesiologists that are passionate about providing safe, high- quality care to all of our pregnant patients. They also will serve as advocates for parturients in order to improve maternal health outcomes.
The aims of our Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellows Program are:
- Comprehensive Clinical Training: Ensure fellows receive extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of obstetric anesthesiology, including labor analgesia, anesthesia for cesarean delivery, and management of obstetric emergencies. The primary clinical site is a large academic center with excellent volume of patients with complex medical comorbidities, allowing for many opportunities for fellow involvement and a comprehensive educational experience.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Foster collaboration with obstetricians, neonatologists, and other healthcare providers to promote a multidisciplinary approach to maternal-fetal care, enhancing communication and teamwork skills among fellows.
- Research Integration: Encourage fellows to engage in scholarly activities, such as conducting research projects or quality improvement initiatives, to advance the field of obstetric anesthesiology and contribute to evidence-based practice. The primary clinical site is a research-rich environment with many opportunities for fellow involvement in new or ongoing scholarly activity.
- Education and Teaching Excellence: Provide opportunities for fellows to develop teaching skills by participating in didactic sessions, leading educational activities for residents and medical students, and staying updated on the latest advancements in obstetric anesthesia. The program monitors faculty member participation in fellow education.
- Patient Safety and Quality Improvement: Emphasize the importance of patient safety and quality improvement by implementing protocols, participating in morbidity and mortality reviews, and actively seeking opportunities to enhance patient care processes.
- Leadership Development: Support fellows in developing leadership skills by involving them in departmental meetings, encouraging participation in professional organizations, and providing mentorship opportunities with experienced faculty members. The program offers a range of options for faculty development.
