STARS: STaff Appreciation and Recognition

Two Star Cards from patients were recently received on labor and delivery. One recognizing Dr. Giacomo Scorsese and one recognizing Dr. Morgane Factor . Dr. Factor's Star card also recognizes one of the L&D nurses in conjunction. Congratulations!

Robert Moore, MD

A previously well 4 year old punctured his carotid artery with a metal straw and his brain and frankly entire body was deprived of oxygen for an extended period. Thoughtful, rapid and goal directed care across several specialties within the university and Divisions within our Department led to an amazing outcome of a relative unscathed toddler! Article from "Today"
Kudos

Xiaojun Guo, MD, FASA has become a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA). Dr. Guo has been a member of our department since 2000. Congratulations!
Visiting Professor Dr. Martin Angst
James P. Dilger, PhD

Our Visiting Professor this month is Martin S. Angst, M.D., Professor of Anesthesia, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA. Dr. Angst received his Medical Doctorate and Thesis from the Medical School at the University of Berne, Switzerland. He did a residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of Burgdorf, Switzerland and a residency in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital of Berne. In 1994, he came to the US to do a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at Stanford. At Stanford, he moved up steadily through the academic ranks and became Professor in 2011.

Dr. Angst's research interest is the interplay between anesthesia and the immune system. in his current research, his goal is to identify immune phenotypes that predict the outcome of patients receiving anesthesia and/or analgesia. Ultimately, he would like to devise strategies that reduce the risk of postoperative complications due to the effects of anesthetic drugs on the immune system. He and his colleagues have ongoing support from the NIH and other agencies for investigations such as "B Lymphocyte-Mediated Autoimmunity in Pain after Trauma” and “Signatures of Pain Recovery in Teens (SPRINT)”. Dr. Angst is also receiving support from industry to explore how drugs being developed for neurodegenerative diseases, affect blood leukocytes.

Dr. Angst has published 120 peer-reviewed papers and over 90 abstracts on subjects ranging from pharmacokinetics, to hyperalgesia, to bioinformatics, to microgravity. He has presented over 60 lectures internationally. He originally planned to visit in March 2020 but we all know what happened! We are delighted that can finally join us at Stony Brook!

• September 20 Resident Lecture: "Neuro-anesthesia: Anesthetic Management of Aneurysms and Vascular Malformations"

• September 20 Grand Rounds: "Biological Determinants of Postoperative Recovery"

Anesthesia Interest Groups

Ursula Landman, DO

On August 30, we had a joint meeting of the Stony Brook Anesthesia Interest Group and the NYIT-COM Anesthesia Interest Group. A total of 66 students attended! Interest in anesthesiology is booming! I gave an introduction to anesthesiology talk to the group. I discussed our specialty as a career and career paths that can be taken. A lively and comprehensive question and answer period followed. We are looking forward to a fabulous year together.
