Academic Research Evening

James P. Dilger, PhD

The 2025 Dr, Peter S.A. Glass Academic Research Evening took place on May 13 in the Wang Center. Members of the department presented xx posters from their research. Five of these from the Basic Sciences and five from Clinical Research were presented in judged, moderated poster sessions.

Clinical: Alina Razak, MD, Resident; Giancarlo Sabetta, BS, Medical Student; Kirtana Roopan, BS/MD Student; Jasper Murphy, Medical Student

Basic Science: Swetha MurthyGowda, PhD, Postdoctoral Associate; Michael Spurgat, PhD, Postdoctoral Associate; Robert Blosser, Undergraduate Student; Kai Bou, BS, Master's Student; Samantha Cobos, PhD, Postdoctoral Associate
Samuel DeMaria, Jr., MD was the Keynote Speaker. He is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Otolaryngology, and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine in the Mount Sinai Health System. His topic, "Incivility and Patient Safety" took a behavioral psychological view of interactions among medical professionals. It was filled with humorous anecdotes as well as hard data.
The basic science judges were Mary Kritzer, PhD (Neurobiology and Behavior) and Markus Riessland, PhD (Neurobiology and Behavior)) and the clinical research judges were Aaron Sasson, MD (Surgery) and On Chen, MD (Medicine). They were tasked with identifying three "bests". This year, they found only two ... because Medical Student Giancarlo Sabetta walked away with both the "Best Clinical Science Abstract" and "Best Trainee Abstract" awards. He presented two of the moderated posters: "Characterizing Baseline Membrane Lung Resistance in ECMO", and "Diagnostic Performance of Pressure Gradients in Assessing Membrane Health During ECMO". The "Best Basic Science Abstract" award went to Kai Bou, a Master's Student in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. He spoke on "Novel Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5 Inhibitor ART26.12 as an Analgesic for Osteoarthritic Pain".

Congratulations to Dr. Alex Tsivitis for being the recipient of the 2025 Timothy D. Ernst, DO AOCA Resident of the Year Award by the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists! This distinguished award recognizes physicians who exemplify remarkable scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the osteopathic profession. Dr. Tsivitis’s achievement will be celebrated during the Annual AOCA Meeting in September 2025.

   Way to go Alex! 😊
Dr. Mohammad Fauzan, who recently defended his PhD thesis, placed first for his presentation at the BRIDGES Graduate Conference. BRIDGES is an interdisciplinary conference across multiple departments at SBU. Mohammad did his research on "Astrocytic FABP5 Mediates Endocannabinoid Transport at Hippocampal Synapses" in the lab of Dr. Martin Kaczocha. His accomplishment was cited in SBU News and The Four Seasons, The SBU Graduate Arts and Sciences Magazine. Congratulations Dr. Fauzan!

Dr. Srinivas Pentyala mentored an undergraduate student who wanted to go to our medical school, but she lacked confidence. With Dr. Pentyala’s positive reinforcement, she plugged along and I am happy to say, she got accepted to our medical school! This is what she brought in for him to show her appreciation with a little note on top of the Dunkin Donuts box. I appreciate all the care and guidance he gives our students!
