Class of 2029

Joy Schabel, MD

Thank you to everyone for your help with recruitment this year, especially to Drs. Elias, Mattimore and Razak for coordinating the many resident-applicant “Meet and Greets” and participating in interview days, our “Meet and Greet” resident attendees, faculty interviewers (Drs. Poovathoor, DeLemos, Costa and Abola), our clinical faculty and leadership for their support, and to Sharri Fassberger for managing the entire interview process for our program.
Anesthesia Interest Groups

Ursula Landman, DO

Our recent Anesthesia Interest Group meeting featured the graduating medical students who matched to residency programs. They told about their experience in the interview process. At the Stony Brook meeting, the 4th year medical students who spoke were: Naomi Nguyen, James Espleta, Benjamin Krauss, Gowri Yerramalli, Silva Baburyan, Emiliya Rakhamimova, Lauren Margolini and Yusef Shibly. At the NYITCOM meeting, we heard from Ryan Lynn, Ryan Cornell, Samantha Lynch, Kimberly Nandlal, Alex Toufexis, Elizabeth Avshalomov, Michael Gao and Chanprert Singh. Interest in Anesthesiology is very high as seen from excellent attendance at both meetings.
Airway Workshop

Seth Greenspan, MD

On Thursday, March 20th, Dr. Slawomir Oleszak and the department's Airway Committee led the Annual Airway Workshop to great success! The workshop included multiple stations such as one-on-one simulated flexible bronchoscopy with volunteer physicians from the pulmonology department. Dr. Daryn Moller gave a brief lecture on the importance of airway management, then ran a station on lung and airway point-of-care ultrasound. Using manikins provided by the sim center, attendees also had the opportunity to practice cricothyroidotomy using the Seldinger technique with Dr. Wesam Andraous, as well as flexible bronchoscopic intubation through a laryngeal mask airway with Dr. Shaji Poovathoor. In another room, Dr. Shruti Parikh described the technique for airway regional anesthetic blocks, and attendees were able to practice combined intubation with a Glidescope and flexible bronchoscope. Overall, there was excellent turnout and participation from our department's attendings, residents, CRNAs, and students!

Resource Corner

Vincent H. Bargnes III, MD

This month, I’m thrilled to launch a new section in the Sleeptalker called the Resource Corner. This space is geared towards residents and fellows and will serve as an archived reference for the wide range of programs available to us throughout residency, from mental health resources to conference funding opportunities. While we’re lucky to have an abundance of programs available at Stony Brook, often these programs change slightly year after year or get lost in the transition from one class to the next.

This month’s focus is on the Residents and Fellows Assistance Program. Stony Brook offers a free and confidential resident wellness and counseling program dedicated to all Stony Brook residents and fellows. The purpose of the program is to offer professional help/counseling/advice/coping skill strategies to any resident or fellow with personal stress or challenges (work-related or personal). Drs. Emily Hill and Phil Pecoraro are the psychiatrists who direct the program.

Some residents may just want to have an appointment to talk to someone about a short-term personal issue; others may like to see someone regularly if needed. They work with the trainee’s schedule, including evenings and weekends. This is a tremendously valuable resource for many residents and fellows. Please see the contact info below.

Contact options:
  1. Preferred: Text or call their cell numbers to set up an appointment: Dr. Emily Hill (516-358-1948) or Dr. Pecoraro (631-816-8316)
  2. Email Emily.Hill@stonybrookmedicine.edu or Philip.Pecoraro@stonybrookmedicine.edu to set up an appointment
AMP News

Zhaosheng Jin, MBBS

We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Emiliya (Emilia) Rakhamimova, student chief of the Academic Mentorship Program (AMP), who matched to the Anesthesiology residency program at Yale New Haven Hospital. Many of you are familiar with Emilia through her emails organizing medical students as part of the AMP.

During her two-and-half year tenure as the student chief, Emilia single-handedly created the infrastructure which facilitated 67 student co-authors in 41 published manuscripts. She will, however, be most remembered for her selfless and dedicated advocacy of student involvement in AMP projects.

Yale is lucky to welcome such an exceptional resident, and our specialty is privileged to gain such a talented and thoughtful colleague. Thank you and congratulations!
Women in Anesthesia Group

Ashley Wang, MD

In February, the Women in Anesthesia (WiA) group had another successful journal club with fantastic attendance from residents and faculty alike. This meeting's topic of discussion focused on family planning as female anesthesiologists, from identifying safe work conditions during pregnancy to seeking and building one's supportive network. We are grateful for our attendings for sharing their personal stories, experiences, and words of encouragement during this engaging conversation. Looking forward to the next WiA journal club!
