Paul J. Poppers Memorial Lecture 2024
James. P. Dilger, PhD and Ellen S. Steinberg, MD The inaugural Paul Jules Poppers Memorial Lecture took place on September 25, 2024. Dr. Poppers, the Founding Chairman of our department, led a remarkable life and career. He was born in the Netherlands in 1929 and he and his family survived the Holocaust by going into hiding on a farm for more than two years. After the war, he went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Amsterdam in 1955 and then came to the United States for residency training. He was a faculty member at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital from 1963-1974 and then joined the faculty at NYU as Professor and Vice Chairman. He was recruited to Chair the Department of Anesthesiology in the newly formed Stony Brook School of Medicine in 1980. During his 20 year tenure as Chairman of our department, he remained committed to excellence in clinical care and research, recruiting top-flight faculty physicians, developing a competitive Residency Training Program and attracting NIH-supported basic scientists. By the time Dr. Poppers retired as a SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1999, he had transformed our department, growing it from a handful of faculty members to include more than 30 clinical and basic science faculty and over 20 residents. Dr. Poppers passed away on June 20, 2019, at the age of 89. Our department and the family of Dr. Poppers (his wife Ann and sons David and Jeremy) decided to honor the memory of our founding chairman by establishing an endowed lectureship, which enables the department to invite a renowned guest speaker each year to deliver the Paul J. Poppers Distinguished Lecture. This year the guest speaker was Dr. Mark D. Neuman, the Horatio C. Wood Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Neuman spoke on "Pragmatic trials, shared decision making, and physicianship in anesthesia: lessons from REGAIN and other work". |

Obituary
Tazeen Beg, MD "Indeed, to Him we belong; and to Him we shall return." Our department family has recently seen a few losses. Nina Joseph's young son was taken away very prematurely; Natalie Figueroa's amazing husband was lost to the debilitating illness, ALS; Nancy Perez's mother passed away suddenly; and we lost a young and bright former resident, Eldhose Abrahams unexpectedly to something we don't know yet. This was within a span of two months or so and is very heartbreaking. It was really a tremendous shock to hear about the passing away of one of our former residents, Dr Eldhose Abrahams, on August 31st. He was married to Dr Aimee Pak, another of our former residents and they have an adorable one-year-old son, Michael. Eldhose Abrahams was born on October 16, 1986 in Kerala, India, grew up in Oman and then emigrated to the United States as a teenager. In the words of his dear sister and the surviving sibling, Georgea Thekkethottiyil: "Despite the struggles and challenges of assimilation, he was proud to become a U.S. citizen and pursue higher education here...He was a well-respected, compassionate, skilled physician, and a brilliant and incredible teacher. He was a devoted husband and father, and a loving son to his parents. Although Eldhose’s life was short in years, it was full of vibrant experiences, travel, and exploration. He was a man of integrity and fierce love for his family. He will be dearly missed." Dr Poovathoor, Andraous and Chandrakantan and many of our former residents attended the funeral services. Dr Poovathoor had a special connection and bonding with him not only as his mentor but also by virtue of his hometown in Kerala, India. Eldhose was a great resident, very polite; kind and caring; quiet but cracked jokes all the time. Every life he touched had only great things to say about him. His colleagues at the Pain Center at Oklahoma University shared many good memories including how he loved to chat about his beloved wife, son, his dogs, and extensive cologne collection! Our thoughts and prayers are with Aimee, little Michael, and the family in this time of grief. May God bless his soul and grant him peace. Amen Life is unpredictable. Give a hug to your loved ones today and take care. |
