Academic Research Evening 2021
James P. Dilger, PhD The 2021 Dr. Peter S.A. Glass Academic Research Evening was held on August 31. This year's event took place in a new venue - the MART Auditorium and Atrium. A total of 32 clinical research and 17 basic science posters were presented. Nine posters were selected for two Moderated Poster Sessions. View the Photo Album. Much of Dr. Flood's research focused on the role of neuronal nicotinic receptors in anesthesia and analgesia. Evidence for the importance of nicotine in analgesia has waxed and waned. In a 2014 review (PMID: 25046780), Dr. Flood wrote "while nicotine is not useful in the perioperative period, subtype-selective nicotinic modulators continue to offer potential promise to the armamentarium against acute and chronic pain". Anesthesia care during labor and delivery is another one of her research interests. And most recently, she has been interested in responses to the opioid crisis. Dr. Flood's Keynote Address was entitled "Perioperative Management of Patients with Chronic Pain". The winners of the judged moderated sessions were:

Visiting Professor Dr. Steven Shafer
James P. Dilger, PhD Steven Shafer, MD is September's Visiting Professor. Dr. Shafer is Professor Emeritus, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Stanford University. Dr. Shafer majored in Biology at Princeton University and obtained his MD at Stanford University. He did an Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Pennsylvania and then returned to Stanford for a Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology. He has published extensively in pharmacological studies of many of the intravenous opioids and hypnotics used in anesthetic practice. His focus has been on creating mathematical models that characterize drug behavior. From 2006-2016, Dr. Shafer served as Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia where he relentlessly and successfully uncovered instances of research fraud. This is one of the many reasons he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Anaesthetic Pharmacology in 2011. We are pleased to welcome Steve back to Stony Brook. He was the Keynote Speaker at our 2006 Academic Research Evening. This year, Dr. Shafer will speak at Grand Rounds on September 1 on the topic "Tracking COVID-19: Where Have We Been, Where Are We Going?" |
STARS: STaff Appreciation and Recognition
Dr. Schabel received the following note from a grateful patient I am writing to express my gratitude and appreciation for the anesthesia team here at Stony Brook. In June I was admitted to the hospital twice due to my pregnancy, thankfully Dr. Karim Shuaib was there for both of my admissions. My first encounter with him was in triage before my first admission, he had great bedside manner, was so kind and professional. He was thorough when explaining the procedure in case I had to deliver that soon and had a good sense of humor which I can appreciate. After several attempts by others, Dr. Shuaib was the only one who was able to place my IV with no issues. Fast forward a few weeks, I was told they were going to deliver me via c-section at 27 weeks pregnant. Being so nervous, I jokingly said “I hope Karim is here for my anesthesia”, then walks in Dr. Shuaib. I cannot express more how thankful I was to see him. His personality and reassurance kept me calm, he talked me through the plan but wasn’t sure if he was going to be in on my case. The next morning I was wheeled down to the OR and when the doors opened Dr. Shuaib was there, I am not sure if this was planned or if my emergency c-section messed up the OR schedule but either way I was relieved and I knew I was in good hands. In the OR the anesthesia team was amazing – they talked me through everything and made sure I was doing ok, there was a little humor thrown in which was a great distraction. Everything went as planned that day and I am so grateful that I was under the care of Dr. Morgane Factor and Dr. Karim Shuiab. Because of Dr. Shuaib, the anesthesia team and everyone in the OR that day- the (very) early arrival of my daughter went so smooth and I am very thankful for you all! |

Shao-Jun Tang, PhD Liu X, Liu BL, Yang Q, Zhou X, Tang S-J. Microglial ablation does not affect opioid-induced hyperalgesia in rodents. Pain. 2021 Jun 17 Chronic use of opioid analgesics is reported to cause paradoxical pain that contributes to the decrease of their efficacy in pain control and the escalation of dose in long-term management of pain. Microglia are commonly thought to play a critical role in the expression of opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) in animal models. In this paper, however, we show that ablation of microglia does not affect OIH in rodents. This unexpected finding raises questions about the mainstream view that microglia contribute to OIH development. Dr. Xin Liu, a senior postdoc associate, is the first author of this paper. |
